Safer Whales, Cleaner Air, and a Quieter Ocean
Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies (BWBS) is a voluntary Vessel Speed Reduction (VSR) program incentivizing shipping participants to reduce ship strike risk to whales, underwater noise, emissions, and air pollution by voluntarily transiting at 10 knots or less. BWBS independently verifies cooperation rates and environmental benefits and incentivizes further adoption of responsible shipping practices that protect marine biodiversity and coastal air quality.
I have worked with BWBS on several film productions and various pieces of content. I provide high-quality images and video for different outreach programs, as well as promote their mission to various news outlets and educational opportunities.

Creating impactful media, versed in protecting and advocating for the health of our oceans, is my goal every time I pick up my camera. This fact alone is the reason my collaboration with BWBS is so meaningful to me. This program has real world impact in creating cleaner air, quieter oceans, and safer whales.

Ventura Air Pollution
Here in CA, peak ozone season also coincides with peak migratory seasons for endangered whales. When ships reduce speeds to help protect endangered whales, they also reduce air pollution up to 30% from baseline. This creates a win-win for marine wildlife protection and #airquality for people living in coastal communities.
California air districts have the authority to regulate stationary sources of air pollution, but not mobile sources like trucks and ships. Many air districts use incentive programs to reduce emissions from mobile sources.
BWBS is a voluntary program that helps partner #airdistricts address a critical source of pollution - despite being outside their jurisdiction.
In 2024 alone, BWBS reduced 1,405 tons of nitrogen oxides, or NOx emissions, equivalent to removing 900,000 cars from the road for an entire year. Over the 10 yrs of the program, emission reductions total 5,900 tons of NOx.

Shipping Companies
Shipping companies join a growing movement of industry leaders—enroll to help reduce the risk of whale strikes & ocean noise, & improve air quality.

Cruise Ships
t’s not surprising that the California coast is a world-renowned travel destination, & gateway for passenger trips to Mexico & Alaska.
It’s beautiful.
It’s also a critical habitat for whales.
And home to communities with air quality that does not meet national standards.
Last year, 17 cruise line companies traveled tens of thousands of nautical miles through Blue Whales & Blue Skies VSR zones.
Blue Whales & Blue Skies is excited to invite these cruise lines to join us alongside global shipping lines leading the way for safer whales, cleaner air, and a quieter ocean.
